The Compensation Fund, the Department of Employment and Labour agency that pays out for occupational injuries and diseases, runs a bursary for the people it serves. It funds workers left permanently disabled by workplace injuries who want to retrain, and the children and dependants of injured or deceased workers, through a full package at public colleges and universities.

About the Compensation Fund Bursary

  • Fields: accounting and financial sciences, actuarial science, economics, engineering, health and clinical sciences, ICT, marine and maritime studies, quality control, mathematics and science education, and statistics and data science.
  • Continuing students may be funded for advanced diplomas or honours in accounting science, chiropractic, actuarial science and medical orthotics and prosthetics.
  • Covers tuition, prescribed study materials, accommodation and a monthly stipend, renewable each year on results and available funds.
  • Studied at public TVET colleges, community education and training colleges and universities.

Compensation Fund Bursary eligibility requirements

  • Group 1: unemployed South African citizens with a permanent work-related disability who are COID beneficiaries and want skills to return to work or become self-employed.
  • Group 2: South African dependants aged 17 to 35 of COID beneficiaries with permanent disabilities, or of employees who died in workplace accidents or from occupational diseases.
  • Accepted at a recognised public TVET college, CET college or higher education institution in a listed field.

How to apply for the Compensation Fund Bursary

  1. Download the application form from labour.gov.za when the call opens.
  2. Attach certified IDs, your COID pension or claim number, academic transcripts, proof of acceptance, a fee quotation, proof of residence, disability verification and proof of income. Dependants add a birth certificate and the parent’s COID documents.
  3. Email everything to CFexternalbursaries@labour.gov.za with the subject line “COID Bursary 2027”, or hand-deliver it to Compensation House, corner of Hamilton and Soutpansberg Roads, Prinshof, Pretoria, before the closing date.
