About South African Weather Service Bursary

The SAWS bursary program is a targeted initiative designed to cultivate the next generation of weather forecasting professionals in South Africa. 

Successful applicants will embark on a one-year intensive training internship focused on weather forecasting at the SAWS head office in Pretoria. 

This program incorporates the essential dynamical courses prescribed by the WMO, ensuring graduates possess the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to excel in their meteorological careers.

Following successful completion of the program, graduates may be deployed to various forecasting offices across South Africa, including Pretoria, or Tambo International Airport, Bloemfontein, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town. 

This bursary program is specifically designed to support future forecasters and does not cover any existing student debt or outstanding loans.

South African Weather Service Bursary Eligibility Criteria

Before starting with your application,you must ensure you meet the minimum eligibility requirements set forth by SAWS:

  1. South African Citizenship: This bursary program is exclusively open to South African citizens.
  2. Academic Qualifications: You must hold a completed Honours degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences.
  3. Mathematics Proficiency: Demonstrated competency in Mathematics at the second-year university level is mandatory.
  4. Physical Science Foundation: A pass in Physical Science at the first-year university level is required.
  5. Computer Literacy: Basic computer literacy skills are essential for effectively navigating the necessary software and applications used in weather forecasting.
  6. Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills are crucial for working effectively within a team environment and collaborating with various stakeholders.
