The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is the driving force behind the Funza Lushaka Bursary (District-Based) program.

Established in 2007, the WCED’s overarching goal is to ensure all students have access to quality education.

The Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme, launched as part of this commitment, aims to cultivate the next generation of South African educators by nurturing a passion for teaching.

About Funza Lushaka Bursary (District-Based)

Introduced in 2012, the District-Based Funza Lushaka Bursary specifically caters to learners from underprivileged communities in the Western Cape.

This program empowers students who might not otherwise have the financial means to pursue a teaching qualification by providing comprehensive financial support.

The bursary awards are limited to 66 students annually, who can choose to specialize in various teaching disciplines at any of the following prestigious institutions within the Western Cape:

  1. University of the Western Cape (UWC)
  2. Stellenbosch University (SU)
  3. Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)

Funza Lushaka Bursary (District-Based) Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Funza Lushaka Bursary (District-Based) program, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. South African Citizenship: You must be a South African citizen by birth or naturalization.
  2. Western Cape Residency: You must be a resident of the Western Cape province.
  3. Age Limit: Applicants must be 30 years old or younger at the time of application.
  4. Academic Record:
    • Applicants in Matric must achieve a minimum of:
      • 60% for Home Language
      • 50% for First Additional Language
      • 50% for all other Matric subjects
    • Students who have completed Matric must have a Bachelor’s pass.
  5. Subject Requirements:
    • Applicants for BEd Foundation Phase specializing in technical subjects must have passed Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy in Matric.
    • Applicants for BEd specializing in technical subjects must have passed Mathematics/Technical Mathematics and Physical/Technical Sciences in Matric.
  6. Academic Ability: Demonstrated strong academic performance is highly valued.
  7. University Admission: Meeting the admission requirements of your chosen university is mandatory.
  8. Priority Areas: You must have applied for a BEd program specializing in at least two of the following priority areas:
    • Languages (English, Afrikaans, Xhosa)
    • Mathematics
    • Natural Sciences
    • Technology
    • Special Needs Education
    • Arts (Drama, Dance, Music, Design, Visual)
  9. University Application: You must have applied for admission at one of the designated Western Cape universities (UWC, SU, or CPUT).

  2. Supporting Documentation: Gather certified copies of the following documents:
    • ID document
    • Matric certificate (NSC) or Grade 12 June Report
    • Proof of application or acceptance letter from a Western Cape university
    • Motivational letter outlining your passion for teaching
