The Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals (ABSIP) is a highly influential organization dedicated to addressing the lack of black professionals within the investment and securities industry.

ABSIP actively contributes to transforming the Financial Sector and is affiliated with the Black Business Council (BBC).

Their membership includes individuals at all career stages, from enthusiastic newcomers to seasoned veterans.

Companies within ABSIP represent a diverse range of financial sub-sectors including Corporate Banking, Private Banking, Investment Banking, Asset Management, Insurance, and more.

About the ABSIP Bursary

In partnership with STANLIB, ABSIP offers bursary funding to deserving students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds who are pursuing an Investment Management qualification at selected universities.

The bursary prioritizes qualifications like Bachelor of Business Science (BBusSc), Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), and Bachelor of Science (BSc) within relevant fields such as:

  1. Business Finance
  2. Economics
  3. Financial Analysis
  4. Investment Management
  5. Mathematics
  6. Statistics

The ABSIP Bursary offers comprehensive financial support, covering:

  1. Tuition fees
  2. Book allowance (textbooks/course material)
  3. Laptop (based on financial need)
  4. Accommodation (preferably on campus)  
  5. Stipend (based on financial need)

This bursary is renewable annually, contingent upon satisfactory academic performance and program funding availability.

ABSIP Bursary Eligibility Criteria

Before applying for the ABSIP Bursary, ensure you meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. South African Citizen
  2. From a historically disadvantaged background
  3. Black (as defined by the B-BBEE Act)
  4. Completed Matriculation
  5. Enrolled or planning to enroll full-time in an Investment Management related qualification
  6. Accepted or enrolled at one of the following universities:
    • University of Cape Town
    • University of the Western Cape
    • Stellenbosch University
    • University of Johannesburg
    • University of Pretoria
    • University of the Witwatersrand
    • Rhodes University  
    • University of the Free State
    • University of Fort Hare  
    • University of Limpopo
    • University of KwaZulu-Natal
    • University of Zululand
    • University of Venda
    • Walter Sisulu University  
    • Nelson Mandela University
    • North-West University
  7. Strong academic record with a minimum average of 75% for core academic modules/subjects
  8. Aspiration for a career in Investment Management
  9. Financial need
  10. No prior permanent work experience (except for vacation work)
  11. Not a STANLIB employee or a relative of a STANLIB employee

ABSIP also values applicants who demonstrate leadership qualities and participation in extracurricular activities (sports, debating, chess clubs, etc.)

ABSIP Bursary Application Requirements

Applications for the ABSIP Bursary are submitted online.

Along with your application, ensure you submit clear copies of the following supporting documents:

  1. Certified copy of your ID document
  2. Academic record/transcripts on your institution’s letterhead
  3. Quote or fee statement from your university on their letterhead
  4. One-page motivational letter outlining your reasons for pursuing an Investment Management qualification (see our tips for writing a bursary application motivational letter)
  5. Certified copies of your parent(s)/guardian(s)’ ID documents
  6. Proof of income for your parent(s)/guardian(s) (latest 3 months’ payslips – certified copies; affidavit if unemployed)
  7. Your parent(s)/guardian(s)’ 3 months’ bank statements

Incomplete applications with missing documents will likely be disqualified.
