DHET Hungarian Government International Scholarship Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the DHET Hungarian Government International Scholarship, you must be:
- A South African citizen in good health.
- Possessing a strong academic record:
- Bachelor’s applicants: Minimum 65% average in your NSC (excluding Life Orientation).
- Postgraduate applicants: Minimum 60% average mark achieved in your previous studies.
- Interested in studying in Hungary and committed to contributing to South Africa’s development.
- Available to begin studies in Hungary from September 2024.
- Meeting the entry requirements for your chosen program in Hungary.
- Fulfilling the minimum academic requirements for a similar program at a South African university.
All fields of study are considered, with priority given to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
Medical studies applications are only accepted at the University of Debrecen and University of Pecs.
DHET Hungarian Government International Scholarship Application Requirements
In addition to the general requirements outlined on the Stipendium Hungaricum website (the official application platform), South African applicants need to upload the following documents:
For Bachelor’s Programs (Full Degree & Exchange):
- Copy of South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a Bachelor’s pass or an equivalent certificate if applicable.
- Marks of pre-requisite subjects relevant to your chosen field of study.
- A one-page letter of motivation for both the scholarship and your chosen field of study.
For Master’s Programs (Full Degree & Exchange):
- Copy of degree certificate(s), minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with Honours or equivalent qualification (SAQA verification required for foreign degrees).
- Official transcripts of all previous university studies.
- A one-page letter of motivation for both the scholarship and your chosen field of study.
- Two reference letters, signed on official letterhead with contact details. At least one reference must be from a schoolteacher (for Bachelor’s applicants) or a lecturer/professor (for Master’s applicants).
For Doctoral Programs (Full Degree & Exchange):
- Copy of degree certificates, including a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification (SAQA verification required for foreign degrees).
- Official transcripts of all previous university studies.
- A 1000-word research proposal with specific headings (Title, Objectives, Rationale, Methodology, Relevance of Study, References).
- A one-page letter of motivation for both the scholarship and your chosen field of study.
- Two reference letters, signed on official letterhead with contact details. At least one reference must be from a lecturer/professor.
- If required by the program, a statement of acceptance from your chosen supervisor at the Hungarian host institution.

Applications are submitted exclusively through the Stipendium Hungaricum website by the deadline (January 15th, 2024).
South African applicants must ensure their application meets all DHET requirements to be considered for nomination.
