Add schools to FAFSA easily

While completing the initial FAFSA form is important, you might not have finalized your college choices by the time you submit it.

The good news is that you can add schools to FAFSA easily through simple and brief processes.

How to Add Schools to FAFSA Easily

There are three primary methods to add schools to your FAFSA application: online, by phone, and by mail.

Each method has its advantages, so you will have to choose the one that best suits your needs.

Add Schools to FAFSA Online

The online method is the quickest and most recommended way to add schools to your FAFSA.

This is what you need to do:

  1. Visit the Federal Student Aid website.
  2. Click on “Access My FSA ID” and log in using your FSA ID. If you haven’t created an FSA ID yet, you can do so on the same page.
  3. Under “My Aid,” select the FAFSA form you want to modify (usually the most recent application year).
  4. Click on “Make Corrections” or “Add Schools” (the option might vary slightly depending on the application year).
  5. You’ll be directed to a page where you can search for schools by name or code. The FAFSA website provides a dropdown menu with pre-populated school codes for easy selection.
  6. Choose the schools you want to add and confirm your selections.
  7. Once you’ve added all desired schools, submit your updated FAFSA application.

Add Schools to FAFSA by Phone

If you prefer phone assistance, you can contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243).

This is what you should expect:

  1. Have your FSA ID and Data Release Number (DRN) readily available. You can find your DRN on your Student Aid Report (SAR) or FAFSA confirmation page.
  2. A customer service representative will guide you through the process of adding schools.
  3. Be prepared to provide the names or codes of the schools you want to add.

Add Schools to FAFSA by Mail

While it is the least preferred method due to processing times, you can add schools by mail using the following steps:

  1. Print a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR).
  2. On the SAR, write the names and codes of the schools you want to add in the designated section for corrections.
  3. Sign and date the SAR.
  4. Mail the corrected SAR to the address provided on the document.

There’s a limit to the number of schools you can add to your FAFSA. As of the 2024-2025 application year, you can list up to ten schools on your initial application.

However, you can add more schools later using the methods mentioned above.

It’s essential to remember that adding schools does not require additional signatures from parents or guardians unless you are making other changes to your FAFSA.

The schools you add will receive access to your FAFSA information once you submit the update.
