The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) is the oldest and largest stock exchange in Africa. 

Recognizing the importance of education for future generations, the JSE created the JSE Empowerment Fund (JEF) to assist deserving South African students in achieving their academic goals.

The JSE Empowerment Fund aims to bridge the financial gap for underprivileged South African students pursuing careers critical to the country’s economic growth. 

The bursary program targets fields like finance, computer science, and mathematics, fostering a skilled workforce for the future.

About JSE Empowerment Fund Bursary

The JSE Bursary offers financial support to academically deserving students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. 

It covers undergraduate and postgraduate (Honours) studies at select South African universities.

Here’s a breakdown of the bursary details:

  1. Fields of Study: Accounting, Actuarial Science, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Economics, Finance, Informatics, Information Technology, and Mathematics.
  2. Level of Study: Entering 2nd, 3rd year, or Honours level in 2025.
  3. Eligible Universities: University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, University of the Witwatersrand, University of Cape Town, University of Limpopo, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of the Free State, University of Fort Hare, Nelson Mandela University, North-West University.

Eligibility Criteria for the JSE Empowerment Fund Bursary

Before applying, ensure you meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. South African Citizenship: You must be a South African citizen.
  2. Completed Matric: You must have a completed National Senior Certificate (Matric).
  3. Full-Time Studies: You must be enrolled full-time for a degree qualification in one of the listed fields.
  4. Year of Study: Commencing your 2nd, 3rd year, or Honours level in 2025.
  5. University: You must be registered at one of the mentioned South African universities.
  6. Academic Performance: You must demonstrate a strong academic record with a minimum overall average of 60%.
  7. Financial Need: Your total household income must not exceed R600,000 per annum.
  8. Designated Group: You must be from a designated group (previously disadvantaged background).

JSE Empowerment Fund Bursary Application Requirements

The application process for the JSE Bursary is entirely online. Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Online Application: Submit your application through the JSE Bursary Application portal.
  2. Supporting Documents: Upload clear copies of the following documents:
    • Certified copy of your South African ID document.
    • Full academic record/transcripts, including the most recent results, on official university letterhead.
    • Proof of university registration on official university letterhead.
    • Proof of parents’/guardians’ household income (latest payslips, affidavit if unemployed, proof of grant or pension if applicable), certified copies.
    • Proof of residence.
    • An affidavit confirming the accuracy of all information provided in the application.

Incomplete applications with missing documents will be disqualified.
