Old Mutual Education Trust (OMET) Bursary South Africa 2025
Established in 2005, the Old Mutual Education Trust (OMET) is a social investment initiative by Old Mutual.
It aims to empower members and dependents of its partner trade unions by providing financial assistance for tertiary education.
OMET is a core part of Old Mutual’s commitment to Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) and transformation in South Africa.
The Trust uses dividends from its Old Mutual plc shares to offer scholarships to deserving students.
Since its inception, OMET has invested over R188 million and supported over 442 graduates affiliated with its partner trade union organizations.
About Old Mutual Education Trust (OMET) Bursary
The OMET Bursary is a prestigious scholarship program awarded annually to deserving students linked to the ten participating trade unions.
It offers financial aid to pursue undergraduate studies (certificates, diplomas, or first degrees) at any accredited public university in South Africa.
The bursary is not intended for postgraduate studies, short courses, or second qualifications.
In addition to financial support, OMET also offers valuable resources like laptops, academic support, career guidance, and access to counseling services to bolster the overall success of its scholars.
OMET Bursary Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the OMET Bursary, you must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Have completed Matric (Grade 12) or be currently enrolled in Matric.
- Be pursuing or intending to pursue your first undergraduate qualification (certificate, diploma, or degree).
- Be planning to study at a recognized and accredited public university in South Africa.
- Fall under one of the following categories:
- Paid-up member of a participating trade union (listed below).
- Spouse (legally defined) of a paid-up member or staff member of a participating trade union.
- Child dependent (under 25 years old) of a paid-up member or staff member of a participating trade union (including adopted children, stepchildren, grandchildren, or blood relatives for whom the union member holds sole financial responsibility).
- Full-time, permanent employee of a participating trade union.
- Spouse (legally defined) of a full-time, permanent employee of a participating trade union.
- Child dependent (under 25 years old) of a full-time, permanent employee of a participating trade union (including adopted children, stepchildren, grandchildren, or blood relatives for whom the union member holds sole financial responsibility).
Old Mutual Education Trust Bursary Application Requirements
Applications for the OMET Bursary are submitted exclusively online at the Old Mutual Education Trust Bursary Application portal.
New Applicants will need to create an account before logging in and applying.
Current Scholarship Holders will already have their accounts pre-created by OMET.
All you’ll need to do is reset your password before logging in using the “Forgot My Password” function.
All applications must be accompanied by the following clear copies of supporting documents (incomplete applications may be disqualified):
- Certified copy of the main union member/employee’s ID document/passport (issued within the last 6 months).
- Certified copy of the dependent’s ID document/passport (if applicable, issued within the last 6 months).
- Union membership number or employee number (for the main member or employee).
- Grade 11 final results and Matric mid-year results (if currently in Matric).
- Matric certificate (if completed Matric).
- Most recent academic results (including year-end 2024 results and current mid-year results, if applicable).

The deadline to submit your application for the Old Mutual Education Trust Bursary program is August 31st, 2024.
