What is the War Veterans Grant?

The War Veterans Grant is a financial assistance program offered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to eligible veterans who require support.

This grant recognizes the sacrifices made by veterans who fought in specific wars and ensures their well-being in their later years.

Who is Eligible for the War Veterans Grant?

Not all veterans qualify for the War Veterans Grant. These are some of the eligibility requirements:

  1. Military Service: You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident who served in the Second World War (1939-1945) or the Korean War (1950-1953).
  2. Age or Disability: You must be 60 years or older, or have a disability that renders you unable to support yourself financially.
  3. Financial Means: You and your spouse (if applicable) must pass a means test. This test assesses your combined income and assets to determine financial need.

You must note that owning the house you reside in is not considered an asset in the means test.

The War Veterans Grant is currently limited to veterans of the Second World War and the Korean War.

There may be other veteran support programs available depending on the conflict you served in.

We recommend contacting the Department of Military Veterans for more information on other potential benefits.
