Shoprite Bursary Programme Applications Open | Apply Now
Shoprite, a household name in South Africa, began its journey in 1979 with just 8 supermarkets in Cape Town. Today, it boasts over 270 stores across 16 countries in Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands, including well-known brands like Checkers, OK Furniture, and Hungry Lion. Alongside its corporate stores, Shoprite also supports 367 franchise brands across South Africa and Namibia.
The Shoprite Bursary Programme for the 2024/2025 academic year is now open for applications.
This opportunity is extended to students pursuing various fields of study, including Accounting, Biological and Agricultural Sciences, Criminology, Data Science, Food Science, Information Technology/Systems, Retail Business Management, and Supply Chain & Logistics.
Each field has a set number of bursaries available, ranging from 3 to 60, depending on the area of study. These bursaries cover tuition fees, books, and accommodation allowances, with values ranging from R30,000 to R60,000, tailored to the specific field of study and institution.
Upon graduation, recipients are required to work for Shoprite, with a service contract obligation of one year of employment for each year of funding received. This ensures a mutually beneficial relationship between the bursary recipient and the company, fostering career growth and development.
The Shoprite Bursary Programme offers diverse career paths. For instance, Accounting bursars have the opportunity to join the Shoprite Finance team and can participate in the Accounting Articles Programme, gaining exposure to various facets of the company. Similarly, Criminology graduates can become Data & Crime Analysts in Shoprite’s Security & Loss Prevention Department, contributing to the company’s safety initiatives.
To be eligible for the bursary, applicants must meet specific criteria tailored to each field of study. These include being a South African citizen, achieving certain academic standards, and studying at a recognized tertiary institution within South Africa. For example, Accounting applicants must be pursuing a BCom Accounting or BAcc degree and have achieved a minimum overall average of 65%.
The application process is straightforward. Candidates must register an account on the Shoprite recruitment website, select the relevant bursary link, and submit required documents, including certified copies of their ID, Matric certificate, and academic records. All applications must be submitted online before the closing date on 30 April 2024.
