What Happens If Your Employer Doesn’t Pay UIF?

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) helps South African workers who lose their jobs or are unable to work for a while.

Whiles working, You pay into the UIF each month, along with your employer. This money allows you to claim benefits if you become unemployed.

But what if your employer doesn’t pay their share of the UIF? Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Your Rights: By law, if you work more than 24 hours a month, your employer must register you for UIF and pay their share (1%) of the contribution.
  2. How to Check: You can check your UIF registration status online at https://ufiling.labour.gov.za/.

If You Find Out Your Employer Isn’t Paying your UIF,

  • Report Them: You can report your employer to the Department of Labour. There are several ways to do this:
    • Call the toll-free fraud hotline: 0800 212 799 or 080 003 0007
    • File a complaint online: https://ufiling.labour.gov.za/
    • Visit your local Labour Department office
    • Email: BCP@labour.gov.za (Include your UIF reference number, employer’s name, your address, and contact information)

The Department of Labour will investigate your complaint.

If they find your employer hasn’t been paying, they will take action and calculate any penalties the employer owes.

This ensures you get the UIF benefits you’re entitled to.
