Fields of Study

To work as a biochemist in South Africa you usually start with a three-year BSc majoring in biochemistry, offered at most universities, including UCT, Wits, UP, Stellenbosch, UKZN, UFS, Rhodes and UWC.

An honours year is normally needed for laboratory and research roles, and a master’s or PhD for senior research and university posts.

Natural scientists, including biochemists, can register with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP).
