SASSA Help: Status Checks, Payment Dates and Grant Guides

This section of BursariesAfrica helps you get social grants from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA): checking an SRD R370 application, appealing when it is declined, knowing when each grant pays, and applying for the older persons, disability and child grants. We are an independent guide, not SASSA. SASSA never charges for an application, a status check or an appeal, so do not pay anyone who offers to do these for you.

What do you need help with?

Next payment dates

SASSA pays older persons first, then disability grants, then children’s grants (child support, foster child and care dependency) over the first working days of each month. Your money stays in your account, so there is no need to queue on the first day.

Important changes in 2026

  • Gold cards have been replaced. The last day to swap a SASSA gold card for a Postbank black card was 31 August 2026. If you missed it, your grant is not lost, but you need a black card to reach it. Replacement is free at Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar, and at Postbank replacement sites. Dial *120*355# to find the nearest one, or call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55.
  • The SRD grant runs to March 2027. Treasury has said any changes to the SRD will be announced in the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement later in 2026. We will update this page when that happens.
  • More grants are being reviewed. SASSA checks beneficiaries against other government and credit bureau data, and new applicants go through biometric identity verification. If SASSA asks you to come in for a review, go, because a grant can be suspended when a review is ignored.
  • Beware of fake news. Posts about new grants or “double payments” are often false. See the truth about the youth support grant.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my SASSA SRD status?

Go to srd.sassa.gov.za, choose the option to check your application status, and enter your ID number and the cellphone number you applied with. You can also send “Status” on WhatsApp to 082 046 8553 or call 0800 60 10 11.

When will SASSA pay in October 2026?

Older persons grants are paid on 2 October 2026, disability grants on 5 October and children’s grants on 6 October. SRD R370 payments follow later in the month for approved applicants.

How much is the old age grant in 2026?

From April 2026 the older persons grant is R2,400 a month for people aged 60 to 74, and R2,420 for people aged 75 and older.

Is the R370 SRD grant still being paid?

Yes. The Budget extended the SRD grant at R370 a month until 31 March 2027. Any changes after that are expected to be announced in the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement.

What happens if I did not swap my gold card by 31 August 2026?

Your grant is not cancelled, but gold cards are being switched off, so you need a free Postbank black card to reach your money. Dial *120*355# to find a replacement point or call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55.

Does SASSA charge to apply or check status?

No. Applying for a grant, checking your status and lodging an appeal are free. Anyone asking for money to do these is not from SASSA.
