The South African Subtropical Growers’ Association (Subtrop), founded in honor of the late Dr. DL Milne’s significant contributions to the industry, established the Lindsey Milne Bursary scheme.
Subtrop itself is an umbrella organization representing three key associations:
the South African Avocado Growers’ Association (SAAGA), the South African Mango Growers’ Association (SAMGA), and the South African Litchi Growers’ Association (SALGA).
These associations, dedicated to the growth and success of their respective fruits, collectively fund the bursary, demonstrating their commitment to nurturing the next generation of agricultural leaders. Â
About the Subtrop Lindsey Milne Bursary
The Subtrop Lindsey Milne Bursary offers financial assistance to deserving South African students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSc Agric) degree.
The program specifically prioritizes students majoring in Horticultural Science or Agricultural Economics, fields directly relevant to the success of the subtropical fruit industry.
The bursary is awarded annually for a single academic year.
However, based on satisfactory academic performance, it can be renewed for subsequent years throughout your studies.
The awarded amount varies depending on your individual financial needs and is reviewed annually.
Upon receiving the bursary, successful applicants become part of a selective group mentored by Subtrop.
They are encouraged to focus their academic projects and seminars on subtropical crops like avocados, mangoes, and litchis whenever possible.
Bursary recipients are required to enter into a contractual agreement with Subtrop.
This agreement stipulates that after graduation, students must commit to working for SA Subtropical Growers’ Association (Subtrop) for a period equivalent to the duration of their bursary award.
Furthermore, recipients who fail any courses during their bursary-funded studies will be required to repay the bursary amount over a period reflecting the duration of the award.
Repayments begin at the start of the year following the year the bursary was awarded.
