What the trade test rules accept
The trade test regulations set minimum education for access to a trade test. They include an N2 certificate with mathematics, engineering science and the relevant trade subject, so an N3 with those subjects meets the educational part.
What else you need
- Completion of the practical training modules of an artisan learning programme at an accredited provider, or an approved recognition of prior learning route.
- Structured workplace learning, normally at least 12 months, recorded in a logbook.
- Or, for experienced workers without formal training, relevant work experience combined with the right N-subjects, as the regulations allow.

- Collect certified copies of your N-certificates or results.
- Find an accredited training provider or employer offering an electrician programme.
- Complete the practical and workplace components and keep your logbook up to date.
- Apply for the trade test through an accredited trade test centre.
