Other things colleges check
- Subject requirements, especially mathematics for engineering and trades.
- A placement or screening test, which many colleges require before you apply.
- Space in the programme: meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place.
- For some occupational programmes, a workplace or employer placement.
Funding eligibility (NSFAS)
- South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Combined household income of R350,000 a year or less, or R600,000 for students with disabilities.
- Registered at a public TVET college on an approved programme.
- Not already holding a qualification at the same level, and within the N+1 funding limit.
Special cases
- Foreign nationals can apply to colleges with a valid study permit or permit that allows study, but cannot get NSFAS.
- Students with disabilities should tell the college when applying; NSFAS applies a higher income limit and extra time.
- Returning students must meet progression rules to keep NSFAS funding: at least 70% of enrolled modules passed, and at least five NC(V) subjects per level.
