The nursing qualifications
- Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing: one year.
- Diploma in Nursing: three years, for a professional nurse.
- Bachelor of Nursing: four years at a university.
All nursing programmes must be accredited by the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Check the institution on SANC’s list before you apply.
Applying to a public nursing college
- Watch your provincial health department’s website for the application window.
- Apply to the college, such as the Gauteng College of Nursing campuses in Gauteng.
- Prepare a certified ID, your matric results and often a police clearance certificate.
- Ask about bursary conditions, which can include working for the province after you qualify.
