Can I Teach With a Grade R Certificate?

Many South Africans with a passion for early childhood development (ECD) aspire to become Grade R educators.

This foundation phase plays a big role in preparing young learners for primary school.

If you’re holding a Grade R certificate and wondering if it qualifies you to teach, this article is for you.

Can I Teach With a Grade R Certificate?

Unfortunately, a Grade R certificate alone doesn’t qualify you for a full-time teaching position in government schools.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) requires the Diploma in Grade R Teaching (NQF Level 6) as the minimum qualification for Grade R educators.

This diploma equips you with the necessary knowledge, skills, and practical experience to effectively guide young learners in this critical phase.

What level do you need to teach Grade R?

The DBE mandates the Diploma in Grade R Teaching (NQF Level 6) as the minimum qualification for educators in public schools.

This program goes into various aspects of ECD, including:

  1. Child development theories
  2. Curriculum development and implementation (CAPS)
  3. Language development and literacy
  4. Play-based learning methodologies
  5. Assessment and evaluation techniques
  6. Classroom management strategies
